BLEED BLUE. CRY WHITE.

ONE SIGMA. THE SUM OF ALL THINGS.

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity was founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C., January 9, 1914, by three young African-American male students. The Founders, Honorable A. Langston Taylor, Honorable Leonard F. Morse, and Honorable Charles I. Brown, wanted to organize a Greek letter fraternity that would truly exemplify the ideals of brotherhood, scholarship, and service.
The Founders deeply wished to create an organization that viewed itself as “a part of” the general community rather than “apart from” the general community. They believed that each potential member should be judged by his own merits, rather than his family background or affluence…without regard to race, nationality, skin tone or texture of hair. They desired for their fraternity to exist as part of an even greater brotherhood which would be devoted to the “inclusive we” rather than the “exclusive we”.
From its inception, the Founders also conceived Phi Beta Sigma as a mechanism to deliver services to the general community. Rather than gaining skills to be utilized exclusively for themselves and their immediate families, they held a deep conviction that they should return their newly acquired skills to the communities from which they had come. This deep conviction was mirrored in the Fraternity’s motto, “Culture For Service and Service For Humanity”.
Today, Phi Beta Sigma has blossomed into an international organization of leaders. No longer a single entity, members of the Fraternity have been instrumental in the establishment of the Phi Beta Sigma National Foundation, the Phi Beta Sigma Federal Credit Union and The Sigma Beta Club Foundation. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. founded in 1920 with the assistance of Phi Beta Sigma, is the sister organization of the Fraternity.

BLUE WARRIORS | #8 Mr. Magic | Spring 1980

In November 1979, eight young men formed a life long bond under the influence of the late Honorable Brother Frank Noble II. Brother Noble, the organizer of the charter line along with our inaugural Dean of Pledges, the Honorable Brother Grevelle French, were instrumental in establishing Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated at the State University of New York College at Old Westbury, thereby extending the fraternity's presence to universities throughout Long Island, New York.

The charter members of the Notorious Lambda Phi Chapter were unique, consisting entirely of freshmen with the exception of Frank Noble II, a transfer student from Lincoln University. Noble was initially slated to join the “Bloody” Mu chapter at Lincoln, the 12th chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated, but the illness of his father prompted his return to New York to be closer to his family. This establishes a connection between the Mu chapter, Lambda Phi, and the origins of the Bloody Strip. The eight freshmen formed a close-knit group during their first semester, and with Brother Noble’s influence, decided to pursue membership in Phi Beta Sigma.
On April 25, 1980, the Notorious Lambda Phi Chapter was established. These eight young men formed the first chapter of Phi Beta Sigma on Long Island and the first fraternity chartered at SUNY College at Old Westbury & in Long Island.

The genesis of the Lambda Phi Chapter at Old Westbury in the Fall of 1979 marked a significant cultural inflection point for the college. This era ushered in the first class of students who were typically 18 or 19 years old, a demographic shift from the historically older average student age of approximately 24. Crucially, the campus lacked any established presence of Black Greek-letter Organizations (BGLOs). The "Blue Warriors," the chapter's founding line, bravely stepped into this void, introducing the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) to the student body and effectively paving the way for the establishment of the remaining organizations of the "Great Eight."

THE DEEPENING OF TRADITION
Following the foundational work of the Blue Warriors, the second group of young men, comprised of the remaining members of the initial freshman cohort who had deferred their pledge process, began their journey. Their initiation as the "Umoja Brothers" was profoundly shaped by an inter-chapter connection that introduced a vital new set of traditions.
This transformative influence arrived in the Fall of 1980 with the transfer of Brother Roger Miller. Known affectionately and widely as "Big Brother Homegrown," Bro. Miller hailed from the Alpha Theta Chapter of West Virginia State, a Historically Black College and University (HBCU). Alpha Theta Chapter possessed a rich and storied history, having been chartered in 1948. Bro. Miller himself had served as the Ace—the leader—of his chapter's impactful Fall 1977 reactivation line, "The Renaissance Brothers." Having a deep and intimate knowledge of the fraternity's legacy, rituals, and commitment to the established traditions, Brother Miller was a living repository of the organization's heritage.

Upon transferring to Old Westbury, Big Brother Homegrown played a pivotal, hands-on role in the preparation and training of the Umoja Brothers. He personally introduced the established, time-honored traditions, customs, and unique rituals of the venerable Alpha Theta Chapter to Big Brother Sly Ty, who was the line's Dean of Pledges and responsible for guiding the Umoja Brothers through their pledge process. This seamless transfer of knowledge and tradition enriched the chapter's Crescent Club, perfectly blending the founding principles of Lambda Phi with the deep-seated heritage and procedural integrity of an established HBCU chapter. The Umoja Brothers, the first intiates, represented a critical juncture where the chapter's foundational identity was significantly deepened and solidified by the authentic traditions brought forth by Big Brother Homegrown.

Bro. Norman Outlaw & His LBs | Mu Chapter Fall 1979
The Lambda Phi Chapter's formative years were further enriched by a second key relationship, this time with the brothers of the legendary Bloody Mu Chapter. This connection was facilitated through the friendship between certain Mu Chapter members and the Honorable Brother Noble, a member of the Blue Warriors.
The Blue Warriors extended an open-door policy to both Alpha Theta and Mu Chapters, a gesture of respect and brotherhood that is not common practice among all chapters. This specific open invitation was largely driven by the Honorable Brother Noble’s existing history and relationship with Mu Chapter. Although the Brothers of Mu Chapter learned about Brother Noble's affiliation with Lambda Phi after he crossed, the bond of brotherhood was undeniable and quickly cemented.
The Blue Warriors immediately understood that the "culture shock" they were experiencing was their true, unfiltered introduction into the wider fold of the fraternity. The comprehensive lessons and cultural exposure the charter brothers absorbed during the 1980-1981 school year would fundamentally alter the perception of Old Westbury, leading the campus to be viewed by some as the de facto "HBCU of the SUNY school system."
The visits by Mu Chapter to Old Westbury were crucial mentorship opportunities for the Blue Warriors. The biggest influences from Mu Chapter came from Big Brothers Steven Board, Norman Outlaw, and Guy Robinson (all fellow New Yorkers), who consistently imparted valuable lessons about fraternity tradition, protocol, and the profound essence of brotherhood. Mu Chapter generously shared aspects of their rites of passage with the Blue Warriors. Furthermore, the brothers of Mu Chapter enlightened the young brothers of Lambda Phi about the traditions of Sigma Souls & Crescent Sweethearts, and they introduced them to the traditions of the Mighty Eastern Region's heartbeat: the "Bloody Triangle," a revered term encompassing a cluster of prestigious and influential chapters in the region. These connections served to anchor the nascent Lambda Phi Chapter firmly within the broader, established fraternity culture.

Bro. Steven Board & Mu Brothers Sigma Punk Rock April 1981
The Bloody Mu Chapter boasted a rich and monumental history, evidenced by its notable alumni, including global figures like Kwame Nkrumah, the first President of Ghana, and Nnamdi Azikiwe, the first President of Nigeria. The environment at Punk Rock Weekend proved to be the transformative experience they had been seeking.
It was at Lincoln University, in the presence of the Bloody Mu brothers, that Lambda Phi finally found the welcoming, warm, and profound sense of brotherhood they had been striving for. This experience was the revelation.
More importantly, Punk Rock Weekend introduced the Lambda Phi brothers to the remaining chapters that, along with Mu, formed the formidable Bloody Triangle, the vital "lifeblood" of the Mighty Eastern Region. They witnessed a model of inter-chapter camaraderie and deep fraternal love that resonated instantly.
Inspired and fundamentally changed by their experiences, the Lambda Phi brothers returned to Long Island with a new mission. They committed themselves to replicating and spreading this elevated sense of brotherhood throughout New York. In doing so, they became a powerful extension of the Bloody Triangle, effectively forging a new legacy and during the 1990's Long Island chapters claimed the designation of the "Bloody Strip", a testament to Lambda Phi's deep-rooted connection to the Bloody Triangle and their dedication to upholding the true spirit of Phi Beta Sigma.

The "Devastation in 3-D" line became the first to include Sweethearts, who were coronated after the brothers initiated them with a rigorous two-week pledge process to become Sigma Souls. This marked a significant milestone in the chapter's history, solidifying the traditions and practices that would shape our identity and future.
