The establishment of the Notorious Lambda Phi Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. at SUNY Old Westbury marked a pivotal moment in the campus's history of Black Greek Letter Organizations. This historic occasion was soon followed by another significant event, as the campus welcomed its first sorority. Our cherished Sorors established the "Heavenly" Eta Kappa Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated on May 10th, 1980.

From their respective charters, a deep and enduring bond was forged between the Notorious Lambda Phi and Heavenly Eta Kappa chapters. This fraternal and sororal relationship, unified in Blue and White, transcended mere organizational affiliation, evolving into a steadfast partnership encapsulated by the phrase "from the beginning until infinity." Their unified presence has been a cornerstone of cultural life and service on the Old Westbury campus, representing the enduring spirit of Brotherhood and sisterly love that defines the organizations of Phi Beta Sigma and Zeta Phi Beta. They have historically worked in tandem to uphold our respective principles laying the foundation for future generations of NPHC on the yard.

THE BIRTH OF SIGMA BROOK | THE 2ND CHAPTER OF LI SIGMAS | MAD DOGG MU DELTA CHAPTER | STONY BROOK

The rich history of the Long Island Sigmas  is inextricably linked to the dedication of distinguished members who laid the groundwork for its success, such as the Honorable Brother French, alongside his intake committee which included the good brothers Bobby Green, Warren Spencer, Eddie Bell (Beta Iota), Wild Bill (Mu Chapter), Hubert Blue (Theta Gamma) & Tony Erskine (Theta Gamma). Fresh off the "Burning Sands" himself, Brother French entrusted Bobby Green with the pivotal and challenging role of Dean for the charter line of the second chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. on Long Island: the dynamic Mu Delta Chapter at Stony Brook University.

Brother Green's own journey into the brotherhood set the stage for his subsequent leadership. He crossed into the hallowed Brooklyn Alumni Chapter, Kappa Beta Sigma (KBS), during the Fall of 1979 on October 17th alongside his line brother Warren Spencer (ADP of the Mu Delta Charter line.)

The intellectual and guiding force behind Brother Green's own line was the formidable Dean of Pledges, the Honorable Brother Peter Adams, Esq. Brother Adams hailed from the "Do or Die" Beta Xi Chapter at St. Augustine College, having crossed in 1968.

Brother Adams' influence extended far beyond a single pledge line. He ascended through the ranks of leadership, becoming the 16th Eastern Regional Director (serving from 1985 to 1988), and later reaching the pinnacle of the fraternity as the 30th International President of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. (a distinguished tenure from 1997 to 2001). His lifetime of service and dedication was formally recognized when he was inducted into the Distinguished Service Chapter #134 in 2001.

This lineage—from the Beta Xi Chapter's influence on Kappa Beta Sigma, and subsequently, Brother Green's leadership in chartering the Mu Delta Chapter—demonstrates the deep bonds and enduring commitment that characterized the foundation of Sigma on Long Island, creating a legacy that would develop our standards and success.

Nasty Nu Lambda Chapter | Adelphi University

On the fourth day of April in 1981, a significant moment in the history of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. on Long Island occurred. It was on this date that the Honorable Brother Bobby Green successfully established the 3rd Sigma chapter in the region at Long Island University's C.W. Post campus. This new entity was christened the "Nasty Nu Kappa Chapter."

The chapter was immediately recognized for its foundational strength and quickly began to build a reputation. Notably, the Nasty Nu Kappa Chapter extended its reach for a brief, yet impactful, period during the 1980s by initiating new brothers at SUNY Farmingdale. This temporary expansion demonstrates the chapter's early vitality and influence in the Long Island area, contributing to the fraternity's growth across multiple campuses.

The inaugural group of men who established the Nasty Nu Kappa Chapter, are forever etched into the fraternity legacy. These Honorable Brothers were the founding pillars upon which the chapter's traditions and future were built:

The Nasty Nu Lambda, holds the distinction of being the fourth chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. established on Long Island. Its organization and chartering at Adelphi University were spearheaded by two dynamic Brothers, Bro. Tony Erskine and Bro. Hubert Blue. These two visionary men were friends before Sigma which led to them becoming Line Brothers from the Thunderin’ Theta Gamma Chapter, Spring '79, which at the time functioned as the NYC Metro Chapter.

In the fall of 1979, Bro. Erskine transferred to his line brother's school, Adelphi University from Columbia University. Bro. Hubert Blue, in particular, left an indelible mark on the university's athletic program. Blue dedicated four years to the Adelphi Track and Field team. Blue's tenure was nothing short of legendary, as his prowess in the sprints and relays earned him the prestigious All-American status an impressive eight times and inducted into the Adelphi Hall of Fame in 2012. His commitment to excellence, both on the track and in the classroom, served as an inspiring example during the chapter's formative years.

In 1981, Blue, along with Gordon Lewis, Bro. Mike Pooler and Gordon Hinds, were crowned one mile relay champions at the famed Millrose Games in Madison Square Garden. Later on that year, at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, Blue etched his name in the history books of Division II Track and Field as well as Adelphi when he became the program’s sixth ever individual champion, narrowly nipping Darrell Green of Texas A&I, 20.90 to 20.92 to be crowned 200m dash champion. He would add another All-American honor when he helped the 440 yard relay team once again finish in third.

In 1982 Bro.Michael Pooler set the school record in the 800 meters with a time of 1:52.7.

The tireless efforts of Bros. Erskine and Blue culminated in the charter of a new chapter on May 2, 1981, followed

initiation of the Nu Lambda charter line. A cohort of five brave young men successfully navigated the challenging journey across the "burning sands" under the guidance and mentorship of Bros. Erskine and Blue. This historic crossing occurred on May 2, 1981. Officially cementing the Nasty Nu Lambda Chapter's presence at Adelphi University.

Beyond its physical location at Adelphi, the Nu Lambda Chapter was conceived with a broader mission. Reflecting the early organizational structure of the region, the chapter also functioned as a vital Long Island Metro chapter. This unique dual role meant that Nu Lambda became a beacon for young men seeking Sigma in the surrounding area, not just on the Adelphi campus. Throughout the 1980s, the chapter was instrumental in initiating new Brothers from various other institutions across Long Island, including Hofstra University, NYIT Old Westbury, and Molloy College. This foundational period established Nu Lambda as a powerhouse on Long Island, deeply impacting the growth and influence of Phi Beta Sigma in the region.

THE ORIGIN OF PHI BETA SIGMA'S FAMOUS CALL & RESPONSE
"BLUE PHI! YOU KNOW!"

When you hear

“Blue Phi! You Know!”

remember—and cherish—the history behind it.

I am Brother Stanley Dennis, Spring 1982, Nu Kappa Chapter. I once saw a shirt in a store in East Orange, New Jersey, on Central Ave—Hank Greek Shop. The shirt caught my eye because it looked like our colors. On the front, it had the word Blue on one side of the chest and Phi on the other. That combination felt weird to me, so I asked the owner about it.

He told me it was a promotional shirt—basically a misprint. Since he didn’t want to lose money, he hung it up as a sample. Then he showed me the back of the shirt, which read: “Beta Sigma Blue.”

That’s when it clicked: the shirt was supposed to say “Blue Blue” on the front and “Phi Beta Sigma” on the back.

I thought, Ohhh… okay. That makes sense.

But the front… the words stuck in my head:

"Blue Phi.”

Back then, traditions were upheld and being online had a purpose: to foster Brotherhood among the new little Brothers, build discipline, and encourage good habits—studying, responsibility, and accountability. It wasn’t about physical torture or negativity. It was about bonding with the big Brothers—and one sure-fire way to do that was to make Big Brothers laugh. We cherish our brotherhood and upheld the rites of passage passed down to us by Big Brother Sugar Bear of Bloody Mu Chapter.

When the pledgees “walked online” or “marched,” We sang our Fraternity chants or songs like:

“BLUE MAGIC YEAH, BLUE MAGIC, BLUE, BLUE, BLUE MAGIC, OFTEN IMITATED, NEVER DUPLICATED.”

Back then, we had a call we hollered:

“BLUE, BLUE.”

WE SAID IT LOUD AND PROUD.

In other chapters, Brothers said

“Aaaahwoohaa.”

I don’t know the origin of that—but to me, it didn’t hit the same. It didn’t vibrate. It didn’t make us stand out.

In the winter of 1983, Long Island got slammed by a major snowstorm—about 2 to 3 feet of snow. Campus shut down. No café for food. No administrators—unless they lived on campus, which was hardly anyone.

Students literally dug their way to the student center (Hillwood Commons) looking for something to eat. We managed to get in. Somebody had the idea to throw a campus party right there in Hillwood.

We collaborated with the Alphas because they had a DJ with sound equipment—Tommy Allen. We had the pledgees carry speakers, and before you knew it…

The Party was on!

We gathered the pledgees (known as Crescents), our Sweetheart Court, the girls who supported the chapter, and our Doves—and we headed down to the commons ready to have fun.

Fraternity competition was alive and well in 1983—Alphas vs. Kappas vs. Omegas vs. Sigmas vs. everybody. At the party, another line from a different fraternity was there too—three guys on their line.

Then the Sigmas walked in with the Spring 1983 line: “The 8 Wonders of the World.”
And leading them were the Dean and Assistant Dean of Pledges: Paul James and Stan Dennis—football players with competitive mindsets.

We positioned the line to block off that rival line. And because of the size of our guys, it cut the party in two—our side and their side.

We had the line rocking side-to-side with the beat, and then we had them start chanting. The party was in full swing—everybody hyped.

As Dean, I started commanding the line—what to say, what to do—owning the moment. And then I yelled something that had been stuck in my head ever since that day in the Greek shop:

”When I say Blue, you say Phi!”
“When I say Blue...you say Phi!”
“Blue!” “Phi!”
“Blue!” “Phi!”

It was working. The momentum was growing. Then out of nowhere—after a couple rounds—

Gary Johnson jumps out of line with his football, macho, hip-hop self and yells:

“AND YOU KNOW IT!”

All of us turned like:

“GET THAT ASS BACK ONLINE!”

It was crazy—out of control—but funny as hell.

We told Gary:
Every time you hear somebody yell

“Blue Phi,”

you stop—no matter what you’re doing—and you yell

“You Know It!”

From that point on, we yelled “Blue Phi!” from anywhere on campus when we saw Gary—going to class, coming from class, in class—it didn’t matter. We got our kicks.

One time we were in the stands at one of Gary’s wrestling matches. Right as the wrestlers squared up and the ref was about to signal “fight,” we yelled:

“BLUE PHI!”

Gary was programmed. He looked up—and right as the ref started the match, Gary yells:

“YOU KNOW IT!”

Then he fireman-carried the other guy and slam-pinned him five seconds into the match.

We went bananas. At the next party, we chanted… and then we waited in anticipation for somebody to call so we could respond...then it happened!

”BLUE PHI!!”
then “You Know!”

INo social media. No internet. No college kids walking around with cell phones in 1983—it exploded through the grapevine Traditions spread the old way: the New York City Step Show on New Year’s Day, the Philly Greek Picnic, local fraternity parties, and straight word of mouth.

And now?
There isn’t a Sigma alive who hasn’t said:

"BLUE PHI! YOU KNOW!"

Did we know or think it would affect the Fraternity as a whole? No. We just loved our Fraternity, and we love being Sigmas.

Much Sigma love to the

SPRING 85 CRESCENTS OF LAMBDA PHI & NU LAMBDA (CHARTER LINE OF PI TAU CHAPTER)

"THE DAWN OF PSYCHOTIC PI TAU"
THE 5TH CHAPTER OF LI SIGMAS

The Spring semester of 1985 marked a pivotal moment in the history of the Notorious Lambda Phi Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. This season saw the initiation of a legendary line, the "5 Sticks of TNT," under the guidance of a formidable Dean of Pledgees, Big Brother Dynamic. Dynamic himself hailed from the iconic Fall 1982 "Devastation in 3-D" line, bringing a potent mixture of tradition and intensity to the process.

This line of five brave young men represented the sixth generation of Lambda Phi, and their induction was a significant event for the chapter, making them the largest line since the Spring 1981 "Umoja Brothers." The five men who became the "5 Sticks of TNT" were destined to carry the torch of Lambda Phi, solidifying the chapter's presence and impact on Long Island.

The 5 Sticks of TNT had Line Brothers from NYIT Central Islip who were initiated by Nasty Nu Lambda Chapter and would become the charter line of Pi Tau Chapter at the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) Central Islip Campus. This line consisted of four distinct and determined young men, shepherded through their journey by their Dean of Pledgees, Brother Bobby “B-Nice” Boyd, Spring 1984, “Legacy” line and Assistant Dean of Pledgees Brother Robert “Harry-O” Harris, Summer 84, Nu Lambda @ NYIT OLD WESTBURY. The Spring 85 pledge class culminated in the formation and chartering of the 5th chapter of Phi Beta Sigma on Long Island on April 10, 1986: the Psychotic Pi Tau Chapter.

THE FINAL CHAPTER OF THE BLOODY STRIP.
THE AUDACIOUS ALPHA ALPHA IOTA CHAPTER | HOFSTRA

Bro. Keith McMillan (Spring ’88) of the Pi Nu Chapter at James Madison University arrived at Hofstra University carrying more than just his experience as a student-athlete—he carried the spirit, values, and vision of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.. His transfer to Hofstra, driven by basketball, would ultimately become the catalyst for something far greater than points on a scoreboard.

While on campus, McMillan crossed paths with Demetrius Dudley, a rising basketball star whose talent and competitive fire quickly made him a standout within the Hofstra community. What began as a mutual respect between two driven young men soon developed into a genuine friendship. Through conversations, shared discipline, and exposure to Sigma’s ideals—Brotherhood, scholarship, and service—McMillan introduced Dudley to the deeper purpose and lifelong commitment of Phi Beta Sigma.

Dudley suited up for the Hofstra Pride for two electrifying seasons, 1991–92 and 1992–93, and left an indelible mark on the program. In the 1991–92 season, he emerged as the team’s leading scorer, averaging an impressive 21.7 points per game. Rather than slowing down, Dudley elevated his game even further in his final season, increasing his average to 22.7 points per game, cementing his reputation as one of the most dynamic scorers in Hofstra history.

Following his superstar season, Dudley made a defining decision—not only as an athlete, but as a man. He pledged his loyalty to Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., transforming his bond with McMillan from friendship into Brotherhood. This commitment helped plant the seeds for Sigma’s presence and legacy at Hofstra University, demonstrating how athletic excellence and fraternal purpose could intersect to build something lasting. Dudley, McMillan and 8 brave young men would become the Audacious Ass Wreckin’ Alpha Alpha Iota Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma on 3:06am on May 6th 1992.

Despite playing only two seasons, Dudley amassed 1,220 career points, ranking 24th all-time in Hofstra men’s basketball history—an extraordinary achievement given his limited tenure. His legacy was punctuated on February 9, 1993, when he delivered a historic 44-point performance against Central Connecticut State, the fifth-highest single-game scoring total the program has ever recorded.

Together, the story of Bro. Keith McMillan and Bro. Demetrius Dudley represents more than basketball accolades. It is a testament to mentorship, vision, and the power of Sigma Brotherhood—how one transfer student’s influence helped spark a legacy of Phi Beta Sigma at Hofstra University that would extend far beyond the hardwood.
